چکیده
ABSTRACT We revise the taxonomy of species ant genus Cephalotes occurring in Brazil. Sixty-four are recognized, distributed 14 groups. Five described as new: gabicamacho new species, marycorn and monicaulyssea (angustus group); liviaprado (fiebrigi mariadeandrade (pinelii group). The soldier gyne C. adolphi group), male nilpiei group) for first time. marginatus is synonymized under atratus. bruchi laminatus groups fiebrigi pusillus groups, respectively. group manni proposed, derived from basalis group. Distribution maps each Brazil provided. In addition, we provide an illustrated morphological glossary identification keys workers soldiers all Brazilian species.

Description of Cephalotes specularis n. sp. (Formicidae: Myrmicinae)-the mirror turtle ant.
We describe here Cephalotes specularis n. sp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Myrmicinae: Cephalotini) based on minor and major workers, gynes and larvae from Uberlândia, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. On morphological and molecular grounds, this new species belongs to the C. fiebrigi + C. bruchi species complex, of which there are 11 previously described species (one in C. bruchi group and 10 in the C....
متن کاملThe geographic distribution of parasite-induced fruit mimicry in Cephalotes atratus (Formicidae: Myrmicinae).
Parasite distributions fundamentally depend on the distributions of their hosts but may be more restricted than their hosts. Host-parasite symbioses tend to be spatially aggregated, and widely distributed host-parasite relationships are rare. Here, we combine field observations with published collection data to document the current known distribution of the nematode, Myrmeconema neotropicum, wh...
متن کاملNatural history and phylogeny of the fungus-farming ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Myrmicinae: Attini)
Ants of the tribe Attini comprise a monophyletic group of approximately 230 described and many more undescribed species that obligately depend on the cultivation of fungus for food. In return, the ants nourish, protect, and disperse their fungal cultivars. Although all members of this tribe cultivate fungi, attine ants are surprisingly heterogeneous with regard to symbiont associations and agri...
متن کاملNuclear mitochondrial-like sequences in ants: evidence from Atta cephalotes (Formicidae: Attini).
Nuclear mitochondrial-like sequences (numts) are copies of mitochondrial DNA that have migrated to the genomic DNA. We present the first characterization of numts in ants, these numts being homologues to a mitochondrial DNA fragment containing loci the 3' portion of the cytochrome oxidase I gene, an intergenic spacer, the tRNA leucine gene and the 5' portion of the cytochrome oxidase II gene. A...
متن کاملCytogenetic data on six leafcutter ants of the genus Acromyrmex Mayr, 1865 (Hymenoptera, Formicidae, Myrmicinae): insights into chromosome evolution and taxonomic implications
Cytogenetic data for the genus Acromyrmex Mayr, 1865 are available, to date, for a few species from Brazil and Uruguay, which have uniform chromosome numbers (2n = 38). The recent cytogenetic data of Acromyrmex striatus (Roger, 1863), including its banding patterns, showed a distinct karyotype (2n = 22), similar to earlier studied Atta Fabricius, 1804 species. Karyological data are still scarce...
